Following studies in product design and business, Lovestrand settled in New York, where he began his professional trajectory in retail buying. Drawn by questions of curation and authorship, he soon turned away from this commercial framework to focus on styling, in close collaboration with a boutique to which he became affiliated. He subsequently relocated to Los Angeles, assisting established figures and contributing to publications such as Numéro, At Large, and Office. It was in this context that he developed his photographic practice, pursuing a highly personal artistic direction shaped by a rigorous understanding of fashion and a refined visual culture.

INTENTIONS & DETAILS
INTENTIONS & DETAILS
- SLN : Your chief characteristic ?
C. L.: Self-knowing.
In Carl Lovestrand’s photographic practice, chance plays a minimal role. Each image emerges from a sustained attention to detail, within an evolving process that demands both introspection and acute responsiveness to context. This approach requires the ability to step back from one’s own gestures, to be affected by them and to respond accordingly—standing in deliberate opposition to indifference, which elsewhere may be embraced as a productive strategy. Beneath this sculptural exactitude lies a profound commitment to photography, whose strength, Lovestrand notes, resides “in the breadth of purposes it is able to serve.”
SLN : What you hate the most ?
C. L.: Apathy, in people and their actions

FASHION & THE SUBLIME
SLN : Would you like to be a star?
C. L.: I actually would, yes.
His varied experiences within the fashion industry grant Lovestrand an exceptionally precise gaze on clothing, informing photographic compositions indebted to the visual legacy of classical Hollywood. In styling, he cultivates an aesthetic equally at ease within the narrative tension of a David Lynch film as within the iconic imagery of Steven Meisel or Glen Luchford. He cites them among his references, alongside Keith Richards, as well as his parents, his peers, and older collaborators.
“I remain in constant dialogue with fashion and art, both professionally and privately. Creation and inspiration are inseparable for me; each offers a form of fulfillment and joy.”
At the core of his practice lies a defining principle: an artistic affirmation of a cherished beauty, articulated through a sophisticated visual vocabulary placed at the service of a measured, almost tactile form of elevation—one that seeks not to impose, but to reveal.
SLN: Do you feel like you’re helping?
C. L.: I am instinctively inclined to support those I sense are in need, whether friends, family, or strangers. I believe generosity operates as a cycle. I have received a great deal throughout my life, and I consider it essential to return it.
Saints la nuit is delighted to count Carl Lovestrand among its key collaborators.
