A LESSON IN PAINTING

A LESSON IN PAINTING

SLN: Which figure from the past would you most like to spend a day with?
    J. P.: Georgia O'Keeffe or Frida Kahlo.

Julia Poncin’s work manifests a dual inspiration: her fashion references are as evident as her pictorial ones. "I never conceive of them in isolation," she explains. "Fashion provides me with forms, attitudes, and an attention to gesture and everyday textures. Art, however, allows me to slow down—to observe differently and to recount what I feel rather than merely what I see." This philosophy reflects a vital exchange, both in her practice and in her personal engagement with her surroundings. Her visual gaze remains perpetually curious, weaving a seamless continuity between the snapshots of her private life and her professional commissions.

VESPERAL QUALITIES

SLN: What is your idea of misery?
J. P.: Winter days.

One is immediately seized by the specific light within Julia Poncin’s aesthetic. Its softness sublimates the raw truth of the profiles she captures. In her compositions, nothing is left to chance: illumination, depth of field, and subject poise are meticulously choreographed, yet they never forsake the impression of an instantaneous truth. Her work evokes the sun-drenched echoes of Carlota Guerrero, Pia Riverola, or Henrik Purienne, transposed into a late-summer Parisian landscape. We find here that warm refinement so dear to us—an evocative ideal of chic that has long fueled our collective imagination.

SLN: Your favorite place?

J. P.: A Corsican forest.
